Policy Issues

The New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools works with government agencies, education organizations, and the business community to promote career and technical education opportunities and advocate for our schools and our students.

This section provides a selection of state and national reports about career and technical education, Council testimony on key issues, and other documents that impact our schools.  It also includes links to the websites of other organizations involved in career and technical education.

National Reports

Pathways to Prosperity, a report by the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, on the importance of career and technical education to America’s economic future. (February, 2011)

Career Clusters: Forecasting Demand for High School Through College Jobs, 2008-2018, report by the Georgetown University Center for Education and the Workforce.  (November, 2011)

Up to the Challenge:  The Role of Career and Technical Education and 21st Century Skills in College and Career Readiness, a report from the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education (NASDCTec) and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) on the demand for skills in the global economy and methods by which this demand can be met. (2010)

Common Core Standards & Career and Technical Education: Bridging the Divide Between College and Career Education, a report by ACHIEVE that lays out a blueprint for increased engagement between state education leaders and the career and technical education (CTE) community.  The report was developed in partnership with the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc). (May, 2012)

Certificates: Gateway to Gainful Employment and College Degrees, a report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce which says that certificates are the fastest-growing postsecondary credential and second only to Batchelor’s degrees earned each year.  The report provides a comprehensive analysis of the returns for certificates and who earns them. (June, 2012)

The New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools is an association of superintendents and school board members representing the state’s 21 county vocational-technical school districts. The Council's mission is to promote and enhance the career and technical education opportunities offered by our members.
