PCTI engineering students won first place in the 2017 Nokia Global Innovative Challenge, a Junior Achievement initiative

Junior Achievement of NJ (JANJ) has honored Mark Cacace, the school to careers coordinator at Passaic County Technical Institute (PCTI), as one of the organizations’ three Educators of the Year.

The School to Careers program helps high school students transition to the working world by building workplace readiness skills in the career fields they are studying.   Part of the PCTI program is the Junior Achievement Job Shadow Initiative, in which students work with volunteer mentors.

“The success of programs like this depends on solid partnerships, and one of the biggest challenges is finding organizations that are ready and able to help prepare students for the future,” he said.  “Junior Achievement of NJ has helped remove that roadblock, and we have successfully worked together since 2009.”

Cacase noted that one of his most memorable JANJ experiences was with AT&T, when a PCTI student has the opportunity to attend the Olympics based on an essay he wrote about the impact the JA/AT&T Job Shadow initiative had on his career planning.

This year, PCTI engineering students participated in Nokia’s Global Innovative Challenge –also a Junior Achievement initiative – and won first place in the national competition.

“The JA program inspires students to succeed in the global economy through real world relationships with business, government, and educational partners,” Cacase said.  “The students develop the employability and financial literacy skills they will need to succeed in the 21st century, and the hands-on curriculum connects students with corporate and community role models who are invested in their futures.”

Cacace will be featured in the Junior Achievement of NJ’s 2016-2017 Annual Report and will be recognized at one of their upcoming board meetings.
