22 NJ County Vocational-Technical Schools Recognized on U.S. News and World Report’s “Best High Schools in America” List

April 24th, 2014

Twenty-two New Jersey county vocational-technical schools are ranked among the best high schools in America by the U.S. News & World Report 2014 “Best High Schools in America” survey, released earlier this week.

Biotechnology High School in Freehold, part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District, led the New Jersey schools on the list and was ranked #11 nationally.

The magazine also released its annual list of best US high schools for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).  High Technology High School in Lincroft, also part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District, was the top-ranked STEM school in New Jersey and #2 nationally.

Nine of the top 25 New Jersey schools on the U.S. News “Best High Schools list” are county vocational-technical schools; all received Gold Medals.  Two county vocational-technical schools received Silver Medals, and 11 schools received Bronze Medals and national recognition.  In all, 76 New Jersey high schools made the magazine’s 2014 list.

“The fact that almost 29% of the New Jersey schools on the U.S. News list are county vocational-technical schools is certainly something to celebrate.  However, we recognize that efforts to rank and compare high schools are somewhat subjective, since the rankings are based on the criteria selected by each organization producing a list,” said Dr. Howard Lerner, the President of the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools and the Superintendent of Bergen County Technical Schools.

He noted that while many of the county vocational-technical schools on the 2014 “Best High Schools” list are specialized academies for high-performing students with specific career goals, a number of the schools recognized this year provide a wide variety of technical programs and serve large populations of economically-disadvantaged students.

“The U.S. News rankings, focused on college readiness indicators, acknowledge that New Jersey’s 21st century career and technical education programs prepare all types of students for college and careers,” Dr Lerner said.

Of the 15 New Jersey schools ranked among the top 200 on the “Best STEM Schools” list, four were county vocational-technical schools.

For the 2014 report, U.S. News analyzed 19,411 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia.  Twenty-four percent of the schools surveyed made the “Best High Schools” list:  The top 500 schools received Gold Medals, 1,519 schools received Silver Medals and 2,688 schools received Bronze Medals.
