National Blue Ribbon School award for UCVTS Academy for Performing Arts

September 29th, 2016

The Academy for Performing Arts (APA) at Union County Vocational & Technical Schools has been selected as a 2016 Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education.

APA is one of ten public and parochial schools in New Jersey and 329 schools nation-wide recognized with this year’s Blue Ribbon award, one of the most prestigious honors in the US education system.

The Academy for Performing Arts offers a rigorous academic program along with pre-professional training in theater arts, dance, or technical theater.

Union County’s career academy joins 20 other New Jersey county vocational-technical schools that have been recognized with the Blue Ribbon awards over the past 10 years.

“Congratulations to the students and staff at APA and the entire Union County Vocational & Technical Schools district, which has seen four of its schools receive Blue Ribbon designations in the past few years,” said Timothy McCorkell, the president of the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools (NJCCVTS) and the superintendent of the Monmouth County Vocational School District.

“It’s both a state and national recognition of excellence, since state officials nominate the schools and the federal education department makes the final selections,” he said.

Blue Ribbon school designations honor schools that are consistently high performing and schools that have demonstrated exceptional improvements in student achievement in recent years.  APA received the award based on the career academy’s consistent record of academic excellence.

“The Blue Ribbon recognition is an endorsement of the engaging career-focused learning opportunities that career and technical education provides in addition to a full academic program,” McCorkell said.
