Hors d’oeuvres prepared by teams of culinary students from three Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High Schools will be judged by diners at a benefit fundraiser.
Students from the MCVTS East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway campuses will be joined by teams from Freehold High School, Ocean County Vo-Tech and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in the Junior Chefs Hors D’Oeuvres Competition during Winterfest 2014, sponsored by the Jersey Shore Chefs Association and the Greater New Jersey Society for Healthcare Food Service Administrators. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in the chef’s choice, hot and cold categories.
The event, with the theme “Global Street Foods,” will be held March 23 in the Arline and Henry Schwartzman Courtyard at Robert Wood John University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Winterfest also will include 16 tables of international entrees and desserts manned by chefs from the two sponsoring organizations. Vegetarian and gluten-free selections will be included.
Beneficiaries of the funds raised by the event will include the Community FoodBank; the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties; M.C.F.O.O.D.S., which is the food bank serving Middlesex County, and the Victor J. Houston Scholarship Fund, which assists the education of culinary students at the high school, college and professional levels.
“This is the first time this event is being held in Middlesex County,” said Stephen J. Moir, CEC, ACE, culinary instructor at Perth Amboy Vo-Tech and president of the Jersey Shore Chefs Association. “Each school competing will get scholarship money for graduates going to a culinary arts college.
“Our high school students are able to show what they have learned, and then they get to stick around and work with the professional chefs at their stations,” Moir added.
Winterfest also will include games, music and a silent auction. Among the items to be auctioned will be dinners prepared by professional chefs in your home.
