NJ County Vocational-Technical Schools Lead Newsweek’s “America’s Top High Schools” List

August 19th, 2015

Six of the ten highest-ranked schools on Newsweek’s 2015 “America’s Top High Schools” list are New Jersey county vocational-technical schools, according to articles published today by the magazine.

Fifteen New Jersey county vocational-technical schools were included on the national ist of 500 schools; all were among the top 150 schools ranked.  A total of 56 New Jersey public high schools made the list.

High Technology High School in Lincroft, part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District, was ranked second in the nation.

Other county vocational-technical schools in the top ten were:

• The Academy for Math, Science and Engineering in Rockaway (part of the Morris County Vocational School District)
• Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains
• Bergen Academies in Hackensack
• Middlesex County Academy for Science Math and Engineering Technologies in Edison
• The Academy for Allied Health Sciences in Neptune (Monmouth).

Also included on the list were:

• Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in Woodbridge

• The Academy for Performing Arts in Scotch Plains (Union)

“The fact that more than one-fourth of the New Jersey schools on Newsweek’s list are county vocational-technical schools is certainly something to celebrate,” said Timothy McCorkell, the president of the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools and the superintendent of the Monmouth County Vocational School District.

“This is wonderful acknowledgement that New Jersey’s county vocational-technical schools are the choice of top students, and that they are leaders in preparing all types of students for college and careers.  It is also a tribute to the local public school districts, which prepare these students for the rigorous academic programs in county vocational schools career academies,” he said.

“And while we recognize that efforts to rank and compare high schools are subjective, we also take great pride in the fact that 14 New Jersey county vocational-technical schools were featured on Newsweek’s accompanying ‘Beating the Odds’ list of schools that do an excellent job preparing students facing economic disadvantages for college,” McCorkell said.

County vocational-technical schools on the “Beating the Odds” list included:

• Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains
