NJ Monthly, Inside Jersey Magazines Recognize Performance of County Vocational-Technical School Students

August 21st, 2012

Two New Jersey magazines’ rankings of the state’s public high schools have placed county vocational-technical schools among the top performers.

For the first time in a number of years, NJ Monthly’s annual high school ranking includes a category for county vocational-technical schools, which were omitted from the magazine’s recent surveys.  Thirty-five full-time county vocational-technical schools were included on the list.  NJ Monthly used various data provided on the New Jersey Department of Education’s School Report Card to compile the rankings.  Read the main NJ Monthly story here.  View the county vocational-technical school rankings here.

The Star Ledger’s Inside Jersey magazine recognized 13 county vocational school career academies among the top high schools in New Jersey.  The magazine based its rankings on the most recent High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) scores released by the New Jersey Department of Education, although the survey weighted the test results to give advanced scores greater value.  Read the main Inside Jersey story here.

Inside Jersey also profiled the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (M.A.T.E.S.), which is part of the Ocean County Vocational-Technical Schools district, as one of three top schools on the magazine’s list, along with Haddonfield High School and McNair Academic High School in Jersey City.  Read the profile story here.

“While all of these state and national high school surveys have their limitations, the inclusion of our county vocational-technical schools among New Jersey’s top performers demonstrates that 21st century career and technical education is a challenging and rigorous high school choice,” said Dr. Philip Guenther, the superintendent of Atlantic County Institute of Technology and the president of the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools.

“Today’s county vocational-technical schools attract hard-working, highly motivated students, and these rankings are a well-deserved recognition of their academic success,” Dr. Guenther said.
