Two Hunterdon County Polytech students teamed up recently to compete in the National Automotive Technology Competition at the New York International Auto Show.
Thomas Engelke and Jason Golis—students in Polytech’s Automotive Technology program—competed against 30 teams from across the country in the two-day event designed to test students on their ability to diagnose and repair various automotive issues.
Competitors were treated to VIP passes to the Auto Show, as well as the opportunity to visit career fair booths and attend an awards banquet.
“The entire event was a rewarding experience. We enjoyed the competitions, but we also had fun visiting the career fair and participating in the different activities that were planned for us,” said Thomas.
For several weeks, the students dedicated their evenings to preparing for the competition.
Lexus of Bridgewater provided a 2016 Lexus ES 350 on which Thomas and Jason could practice. The practice car was bugged and altered, and the students spent many hours preparing for whatever challenges would be presented to them at the competition.
