Three New Jersey county vocational-technical high schools have been awarded 2014 Blue Ribbon School designations by the US Department of Education.

Biotechnology High School in Freehold (part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District), the Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in Woodbridge, and the Ocean County Performing Arts Academy in Lakehurst were recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools today by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

In all, 11 New Jersey public and parochial schools were included among the 337 schools from throughout the country that received Blue Ribbon awards this year.

“This designation is the most prestigious honor in the United States’ public education system,” said Dr. Howard Lerner, President of the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools and Superintendent of the Bergen County Technical Schools.  “It’s both a state and national recognition of excellence, since the state education departments nominate the schools and the USED makes the final selections.

“We’re very proud that since 2006, 19 New Jersey county vocational-technical schools have been recognized with Blue Ribbon designations,” Dr Lerner said.  “It’s a great endorsement of the kinds of hands-on, engaging educational opportunities that career and technical education provides to all types of students.”

Blue Ribbon school designations honor both schools that are consistently high performing and schools that have demonstrated exceptional improvements in student achievement in recent years.  The three New Jersey county vocational-technical high schools designated as National Blue Ribbon schools this year all received the award based on their consistent academic excellence.
