2018 NJ SkillsUSA competition

More than 120 county vocational-technical school students who brought home gold medals in state competitions will represent New Jersey at the national SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, KY next month.

The annual SkillsUSA Championships feature local, state and national competitions that showcase the talents and abilities of career and technical education students as individuals and as teams in more than 100 technical and leadership categories.

At each level, the students compete in timed contests and against each other to demonstrate their skills in fields ranging from plumbing, automotive sciences and cabinet making, to video production and web site design, to various engineering and health sciences specialties. The competitions are judged by industry experts and educators.

The philosophy behind the competition is to reward students for excellence, to involve the business community in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs.

“These students are demonstrating more than just their skills; they are proving that our workforce is prepared to lead the way in every technical area our country needs to maintain a strong global economic presence,” said Peter Carey, NJ state director for SkillsUSA.

“Encouraging students to pursue career and technical education is a great benefit for America, and we are very proud of this talented group of students who are true champions dedicated to excellence,” Carey said.

More than 6.000 high school and post-secondary students from throughout the country are expected to participate in the national finals in Louisville.

Best of luck to our New Jersey team!
